1. Review the State Requirements

In order to renew your insurance license, you must complete the required continuing education hours for the lines of insurance that you are licensed in. All of the hours must be completed and reported prior to your license renewal date to avoid a lapse in your license.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Total Hours

24 hours biennially for Producers and Adjusters

Compliance Renewal Date

Renewal date is the last day of the license issuance month, biennially, based on the year of issuance.

You may also need to take specific courses or earn specific credit types to renew your license. These course completions will count toward the total hour requirement.

LINE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

At least 1/2 of the total hour requirement must be met through classroom or classroom equivalent courses. Only 1/2 of requirement may be earned from courses sponsored by any insurance company for which licensee is an employee, licensed agent or broker.

For All Licenses:

Ethics
3 hrs - Producers and Adjusters must complete 3 hrs of Ethics as part of the total requirement.

For Life & Health Producers:

Annuity Suitability
4 hrs - Producers must complete a one-time 4-hour Annuity Suitability Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products.

Long-Term Care
3/3 hrs - Producers must complete an initial 3-hour Long-Term Care (LTC) Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating Long-Term Care products/policies. After completing the initial requirement, producers must complete a 3-hour ongoing LTC training, due every renewal thereafter. Producers who have taken longer courses for other states, such as 8-hour course based on NAIC content, will be able to use this training to meet UT's requirements.

For Property & Casualty Producers:

Flood
3 hrs - Property/Casualty and Personal lines producers must complete a one-time 3-hour course on NFIP Flood Insurance Certification Trainingg prior to selling flood insurance policies.

There are also additional rules about how the course hours can be applied.

CARRYOVER HOURS:

Carryover hours are not allowed.

COURSE REPETITION:

Courses may not be taken more than once in a reporting period.

If you meet any of criteria below, you may be exempt from the continuing education requirements.

EXEMPTIONS:

  • Non-residents are exempt if licensee's home state requires substantially similar CE.  Licensee submits letter of certification (not more than 90 days old) with the renewal card and fees.  If licensee's home state has no similar CE requirement, licensee must comply with Utah's CE requirement.
  • Producers licensed before 4/1/1978 may request to be exempt from CE requirements.
  • A Title Producer who is an active member in good standing with the state bar and has met the CE requirements of the Utah State Bar is considered to have met the CE requirements for the Utah Insurance Department.
  • A producer whose license lapses due to military service, voluntary service for a period of time designated by the person for whom the licensee provides voluntary service, or some other extenuating circumstance, such as long-term medical disability, may be exempt from CE requirements in order to reinstate the license.
  • Producers holding and maintaining the following designations are deemed to have met the CE requirements:  CLU, ChFC and RHU with the completion of the PACE program; CPU with completion of the CPD program; and CFP, REBC, CIC, ACSR, CRM, SOFE or IRES with the completion of their CE requirements.

2. Register for and Complete Courses

Once you have determined the renewal requirements for your license, you can register for courses. Each course has an associated credit type; when registering for courses, select courses with credit types that will help to fulfill the renewal requirements for your license.

PreLicenseTraining.com offers webinar, online, and self study courses for Utah. You can register for courses under the Continuing Education menu at CE Courses.

You must fulfill the course requirements for each of the courses to have them reported.

  • Classroom and webinar course completions are based off of attendance and participation and do not require a completion exam. You must be present for the full duration of the course and be active and attentive throughout to receive credit.
  • Online and Self Study courses are self-paced. You must review the course material and pass the Certification Exam at the end to receive credit.

MONITOR REQUIREMENTS:

Online and self study exams do not require a monitor.

REPORTING METHOD:

Once a course has been completed, the completion must be reported to the state. PreLicenseTraining.com will report the course completions to Sircon.
